This theater originally opened as the Elgin Opera House around 1887. It was located in the new DuBois block that replaced the old DuBois Opera House building which was destroyed by fire in 1886.
Some of the first motion pictures were exibited here starting in the late 1890’s. The Opera House was remodeled and renamed the Grand Theater in 1910. In the early 20th Century, the theater welcomed some well known visitors such as the Marx Brothers, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Susan B. Anthony.
The Grand Theater was destroyed when it suffered a near direct hit by a tornado in March, 1920; two performers were killed as they were preparing for that evening’s show.
