The Palladium Cinema I believe first opened sometimes in the 1930’s, it was certainly operating by 1937. The cinema was originally equipped with a cafe for the use of its patrons. Initially the cinema was independently operated, but by 1963 it was operated by Odeon Theatres (Northern Ireland) Ltd. It was listed as being operated by Shaun Henry in 1980. It closed it’s doors as a cinema in early 1990 just one week after the hideous Jet Centre reared itself and opened on the outskirt’s of town.
The Palladium Cinema then went over for some years in the 1990’s as a bingo hall, and closed sometime in the early 2000’s.
Many attempt’s had been put forward for planning permission to build flats and one of these plans was finally accepted in 2008. Demolition has begun on the week beginning Monday 10th March 2008. Currently, I am in negotiations with the company to salvage the beautiful 1930’s Kalee model 12 projectors and beautiful RCA speakers and power sources etc. Also maybe the velvet curtains and a few seats.
