Located at 2000 Avondale Drive in the K-Mart Shopping Center in Durham, the Cinema 7 showed first-run features as part of the Carmike Cinemas chain (which also owned and operated several Durham theatres: the Center 4, South Square Mall Cinemas, Willowdale 8 Cinemas, and the Ram Triple in Chapel Hill). The Carmike Cinemas 7 replaced the Northgate Twin Theatres which closed and it remained a showcase venue for first-run features until it closed in 2002.
To this day, the cinema sits vacant.

The Cinema sits right next door to several shops which was at one time a Phar-Mor(later Winn Dixie Marketplace),a chinese restaurant and a Big Lots.
The K-Mart was across the other side of the shopping center. The Carmike 7 was in operation from 1989 until 2004.
To this day it still sits vacant. There was talks at one time in converting this into a discount theatre with would be the first in Durham since the Center closed in 2001. The Carmike 7 Cinema would be great for that, but to this day sits vacant in startling decay.
The Carmike Cinema 7 broke record capacity crowds in 1997 when it showed the special edition issues of the original Star Wars movies which included the re-released and the reissue of “The Empire Strikes Back”,and “The Return of the Jedi”. Tickets were sold in advance four weeks prior to the event.
I remember the lines that snaked all the way toward the K-Mart when “Menace II Society” played here to capacity crowds, and broke boxoffice attendance records.
Also seeing “Dead Presidents” here as well as “Boyz In The Hood”. The last picture show that played at the Carmike Cinema 7 was “State Property”.
“Batman Forever”,and “Batman and Robin” played here at the Carmike 7. Also played here was “Mrs. Doubtfire”,that opened around Christmas to record breaking crowds, that brought tickets in advance.
Reports are speculating that the theatre will be demolished.
I found where it states that the Cinema 7 closed in 2002. You also said on2/24/09 that the last movie shown here was “State property” which was not released until 2002 so that would mean that the Cinema was at least still open in 2002 when the movie was released.
