Whitgift Film Theatre

The Whitgift Film Theatre is located in Whitgift School. It opened as a public cinema, funded by the British Film Institute in September 1972. In the 2000’s it was the only cinema operating in Grimsby and screened blockbusters as well as independent films.
The Whitgift Film Theatre was closed suddenly on 28th July 2018. The operators quickly sought to reassure film goers that this would only be a temporary measure, and that they were “working on exciting plans to provide new opportunities for corporate events, training, education and drama groups, as well as screening films. More details next month”.
“Next month” was September 2018, but in November 2018 the website had the same original message. With “screening films” coming at the end of a long list of other activities. This does not bode well for the towns' only cinema.
