81 Theater

Viewing: Photo | Street View

This theater opened in 1955 with a 250 car capacity and closed in 1980, according to my grandparents. It was located between Duncan and Meridian, Oklahoma. I think it was in a pasture.

This theater has not been demolished, as mentioned in the header above. I’ll post a few photos that I took yesterday. I have no idea what was on the property when it was in operation, but the only thing obviously missing is the ticket booth.

According to the Duncan telephone book … appears in 1954 and drops out in 1982. I used to go to this drive in. It was by the Sunray Refinery. The smell in the summer was an issue.

My family has many ties to this old place. My dad, brother and my self all ran the projectors.

A closer address (at least for Google) is 485 N2820 Rd, Duncan, Oklahoma. The drive-in is right across the road on the east side and the screen still appears to be in good shape. http://tinyurl.com/zhbqzre

@Ciganka My dad worked there as a projectionist in the 60s. His name was Bob and I am his son Joe. Were wondering if you had any other pictures from that time frame.

“Why was it called 81 Drive-in?”

Because at one time the road that the drive-in was located on was called Rt. 81. Later on they built another Rt. 81 beside the old one.
