Located on the main shippong street in the centre of Copenhagan, commonly known as Stroget, it is on the corner with Kattesundet. The Metropol Teatret opened on 25th March 1923 with a seating capacity of 557, all on one level. It was designed in an Art Nouveau style by architects Albert Oppenheim and Viggo Jacobsen. The corner entrance contained a circular foyer.

In 1960, it was refurbished and a 159 seat balcony was added, increasing the seating capacity to 716. The Metropol Teatret was well known as the home to Walt Disney films in the city.

Closed on the 8th January 1980, it was converted into retail use. In 2008 a branch of the New Yorker clothing store occupies the building and all vestige of its interior decoration has been removed. The exterior has been little altered and has recently been renovated.
