In October of 1976, a 65-year-old desk clerk, Henry Topping, Jr., was slain in the hotel lobby by a 15-year-old after being stabbed 44 times. The admitted killer claimed that he was on a drug-induced high and was seeking money to buy more drugs. Johnny Perez, the convicted killer, was finally released from prison in March of 2006.
