Northwood Theatre exterior

The Northwood Theatre opened on August 5, 1950, and was built as part of the up-market Northwood Shopping Center. It was re-named Northwood 99 in the Spring of 1980, operating as a discount house, but was soon closed in June 1981. It has since been converted to a bar. It was demolished in May 2020.

This theatre became the subject of numerous protests and demonstrations regarding this theatre’s segregation policies of not admitting people of color. By mid-1963,the Northwood Theatre was integrated.

Ran across this Flickr album of the Northwood Shopping Center from initial construction on up. Multiple photos of the Northwood Theatre during various years. Special Collections at John Hopkins University.
