Opened June 7, 1950, and owned by Gordon Mclendon of Dallas and managed Joe Jones, the Grove Theater was the most plush and magnificent theater in town. A packed house was normal for the Grove Theater until it was destroyed by a spectacular blazing fire on May 28, 1959.
In the early-1970s the marquees were moved to the northwest corner of the square and reopened in an old saloon building and closed after a couple of years. That building became home to the Baptist Temple. As of the early to mid-1970’s Honey Grove was left with no operating theaters.

The Grove Theatre opened on June 7, 1950, as reported in the June 24 issue of Boxoffice. The house was operated by Tri-States Theatres and was designed by Dallas architect Raymond F. Smith.
Manager Joe Jones, according to Boxoffice, had gotten his first job in a theater at the Bon Ton in Honey Grove 34 years earlier.
The fire that destroyed the Grove Theatre in Honey Grove started in the projection booth on May 29, 1959 destroying the theater. That makes May 28, 1959 the last day of operation. Joe Jones moved from Honey Grove to manage what would become the Preston Royal Theatre later that year.
