The June 9, 1951, issue of Boxoffice said that N.N. Bernstein, operator of the State, had closed the theater on May 26, with no plans to reopen. Bernstein closed three additional houses the same weekend, in Hammond, Indiana, and in Waukegan and Harvey, Illinois. He cited losses due to competition from television and drive-in theaters.

The item also noted that the State had been built in 1940, and had opened in August of that year.

I know which site your talking about. LOL

This theater was listed here as the “Bucklin” but that’s all been corrected. The ExitHere photo really had me confused. If you look at the photos of the Bucklen and the State buildings, there is no way that you can mistake one building for the other. I wish that I had found the photo of the Bucklen sooner. It would have saved alot of work.

LM, there is another site that labels this as the Bucklin Theatre, not to give any names. There was the Bucklen Theatre across the street but as you mentioned it has been demolished.

This is a photo of the building as a church. The photo is incorrectly labeled as being the “Bucklin Theater”. Here is a circa 1979 photo of the State Theater.
