Mr. Hess and Mr. Carnes built the Palmetto Theatre on the site of the old Farrelly Stables. The theatre opened in 1920 and catered to an African American Audience. The theatre operated through to 1936. The live performances featured such greats as Louis Armstrong. In a reversal of the usual of the period of time the balcony was reserved for white patrons. The theatre is closed and demolished.
