Metropolitan Theatres has been in the Corwin family since 1923. In the 50s they had more theaters in downtown LA than any other chain. A Los Angeles Times from 1953 lists 24 theaters in downtown LA. Seven were Metropolitan Theatres, which included the Orpheum, Rialto, Broadway, Newsreel, Olympic, Palace and the Roxie. They also operated the Pan Pacific, which wasn’t downtown. As for the other chains, United Artists had two (which included Lowes State), Fox had two and Warner’s had one. There was also the RKO Hillstreet. By 1960 Metropolitan had eliminated the Pan Pacific but added the Paramount, previously listed as independent, and the Globe, previously listed under the Fox banner.
There were also 11 other independent theaters listed in downtown.
