In 1919, Emporia was getting two downtown theaters in the Liberty and one being readied within the Kirkandall Building. The formation of the Strand Theater Corporation led the Kirkandall project to be the $75,000, 1,000-seat Strand Theater built in 1919 and completed/opened in 1920. The plans for the Liberty were soon scrapped and the project was turned into a retail construction also built in 1919 and opened in 1920.
