Located in the Etaw Village Shopping Center. The theatre opened in the mid-1960’s as a single screen theatre under the Stewart and Everett Theatre chain. During the mid to late-1970’s, the Eutaw Cinemas became a twin theatre under the Martin Theatres chain, when Stewart and Everett folded its operations. During the early-1980’s it was owned and operated by Carmike Cinemas until its closing in 1991.

I have fond memories of the Eutaw Theater. It was located at the corner of Elm Street and Bragg Boulevard. I saw about a dozen movies at the Eutaw Theater on my weekends and off duty time during the six weeks I spent at Fort Bragg in the summer of 1981. The movies included James Bond’s FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, DRAGON SLAYER and others.

The cinema was one of the closest movie theaters outside of Fort Bragg. I recall the price was very reasonable and the theater hosted weekend late night shows such as DAWN OF THE DEAD. There were one or two occasions where my Army buddies and I would see a movie, hustle out of the exit door, and then circle back and buy a ticket to immediately watch another movie in the adjoining theater. We were certainly in no hurry to return to the stifling hot World War Two era barracks housing us ROTC cadets.

I remember the cinema as being clean with screens and auditoriums big enough to feel like a real theater. Several years later I found myself back in the neighborhood of the Eutaw Theater, albeit for a quick stop at an adjacent office supply store to pick up some waterproof permanent markers. At the time there was nothing playing that I cared to see. In retrospect I regret not stepping inside to see a movie anyway. Often times you never know when something will present itself as your final opportunity.
