Larchmont Playhouse - Front Entrance

Viewing: Photo | Street View

The Larchmont Playhouse dates back to at least 1935. It is currently a three screen theater. Previously operated by the Prudential Circuit in the 1940’s, by Clearview Cinemas, and in June 2013, it was taken over by Bow-Tie Cinemas, who took most of the Clearview locations.

In the rear of the playhouse you can see the original Larchmont Playhouse partial hidden by Clearview Cinemas sign overlooking I95 New England thruway

In 1992 the manager was murdered by an employee and they found the body in the theater. I remember seeing this on the nightly news. http://www.nytimes.com/1992/07/28/nyregion/teen-ager-arrested-in-death-of-theater-manager.html

Let’s hope that the new operator Bow Tie Cinemas does not close this theatre and propose to knock it down and build condos like they did in the adjacent community where they closed the Mamaroneck Playhouse last week. This theatre is a gem even though it has been turned into a triplex yrars ago.

I do not think they will close this theatre. They just converted to digital about 4 months ago. The Mamaroneck Playhouse. Was 35MM right up to the last day of operation. Bow Tie said it would have been too costly to upgrade and renovate the theatre. Not a very good company when they say. “Movie going like it, used to be, but only better”
