The Golden Gate Theatre was opened on April 24, 1967 as a single screen, 780-seat theatre for the Charlotte-based Stewart and Everett Theatre chain. It was one of two S & E theatres in the greater Greensboro area, the other was the Quaker Village Cinemas. It was twinned by the mid-1970’s. It was acquired by Martin Theatres in the late-1970’s and later on by Carmike Cinemas until its closing in early-1987.

This theatre closed in early 1987, still being advertised as a Stewart & Everett Theatre over a month after Carmike took over S&E. Its sister theatre the Quaker Village Cinemas was also advertised as an S&E theatre until the closing of the Golden Gate Theatres, after which the Quaker Village Cinema ads began using Carmike’s logo. Did Martin sell the Greensboro theatres back to S&E before Martin became Carmike?
