The Gem Picture Theatre opened in 1912, in part of the Constitutional Club building. It was independently operated by a Mrs A.D. Tong. The seating was provided in stalls and balcony levels. In December 1935, the large State Cinema (later Granada Theatre) was opened next door.
Last operated by the independent Medway Cinemas chain, the Gem Cinema was closed in 1943. The closed-down building was taken over by the Granada Theatres Ltd. chain in February 1947, but it never re-opened as a cinema. It was converted into retail use, and was last used as Court’s Furniture store.

This cinema is still in place. It is currently occupied by the towns pigeons and doesnt look in a good condition.
