I wonder why this theater is listed as “demolished”. Judging from the Flickr photo, the building has been remodeled into residential lofts. By the way, the missing zip for this address is 77007.

The premier feature for this State Theater was “Strawberry Blonde” with James Cagney and Rita Hayworth. The State was advertised as “Houston Owned – Houston Operated”.

Loew’s State is already listed at Cinema Treasures, though at 1014 Main Street.

The State at 5913 Washington Street must be the one that was mentioned in the August 2, 1941, issue of Boxoffice: “R.Z. Glass said the opening of his new State in Houston would take place Friday, August 1.”

I don’t know if that State Theatre is already listed here under some other name or not. I can’t find it with a search on previous names, so it’s either not listed or is listed but missing the State aka.

This was Loew’s State 1927-1972. It had 2,200 seats. There was another State theatre at 5913 Washington that opened in 1941 according to the Cinematour site. It had 600 seats in ‘50.
