The Victory Theater is listed in the 1945 Film Daily Yearbook with 448 seats.
The Victory Theatre was not located on Main St., there is no MAIN St. in Nanty-Glo. The main street through town is Second St. So the theatre was located on the main street of town and the address was 1120 2nd St. at Walnut.
Also on all the maps and the info on the town itself they spell it as follows Nanty-Glo
It was also spelled Nanty-Glo in the newspaper article about the fire, but I wasn’t sure if that was correct, since the other theaters listed have no hyphen.
I think I know where the mistake was made. The headline said “Main Business Block Wiped Out by Fire”. I took that as Main Street, when I guess they meant the primary business block.
How many times have those “Destroyed by Fire” stories turned out to be wrong?
Boxoffice burned the place to the ground, too. The December 21, 1945, issue said that the owners, Anthony and Philip LaMantia, did not intend to rebuild. The Victory had been operated as a second-run house.
The February 8, 1941, issue of Boxoffice had an item saying that the 448-seat Victory Theatre at Nanty-Glo had opened. The December 21, 1940, issue had said that the as-yet unnamed new theater being built by Philip LaMantia was in a building converted from commercial use. LaMantia was a local Dodge dealer, and had previously been a partner with Joseph Delisi in the Capitol and New Family theaters in Nanty-Glo.
