The Ritz Theater was located directly across from the Bama Theater, and had the familiar pointed overhang that sheltered the entrance along with a vertical ‘Ritz’ sign above. The theater which opened in the mid-1930’s featured B movies including a lot of westerns and closed in the early-1960’s.

A Ritz Theatre operated by R. B. Wilby at Tuscaloosa was in a March 11, 1930, Motion Picture Times list of houses that had recently installed new ventilation equipment designed for use in theaters showing talking pictures. The item doesn’t differentiate between new builds and existing theaters being retrofitted, but judging from the photo linked by Don Lewis I’d say the Ritz’s building dated from the 1920s or earlier.

In 1963 the Ritz was renovated and reopened as the Capri Theatre, noted in Boxoffice of July 29 that year.

This page should be combined with the Capri Theatre, there was no AKA in the header that is why there are two listings for this theatre.
