The 70mm roadshow presentation of ‘Gone with the Wind'in 1967. Note the side elevation of the Stoll Theatre, to the right of the photo, which was showing the double bill, 'Sex Quartet’ (Claudia Cardinale) and ‘The Fruit is Ripe’. The Stoll is now back to live use with its ‘pre- talkie’ name, the Tyne Theatre. Ironic to think that the place latterly regarded, whilst still operating as a cinema (the only cinema operated by Moss Empires by the time of this photo), as the ‘poor relation’ of all the city centre houses, has survived all the prestigious venues which once existed in England’s most northerly city.

The Newcastle Essoldo was the very first cinema in the North East to present ‘Gone With The Wind’ when it was released in the UK in 1940. Several revivals later the film was reprocessed in both 35mm and 70mm widescreen ratios; the Essoldo was one of the initial UK roadshow venues to present it in the latter format.
Just before final closure there was a special one day presentation of the film in the large downstairs auditorium. At this time a 70mm copy was not available and thus we had to be content with a 35mm dolby stereo print.
