The James Cinemas, better known as the James Street Theater, opened in 1959 and had over 700 seats. Located on the corner of James and Cannon, this late Deco-style theater had marble floors in the lobby and in the theater from 1959 to 1973.

In 1974, this theater was twinned with one screen on the main floor and the other in the belcony. The main theater had 394 seats and the other theater seated only 146. In 1982 this old run down theater closed its doors forever and was turned into a sports bar and a bank.

Sadly, the theater is barely recognizable today.

I am a bit baffled by this entry. As far as I can tell – this theatre never existed.

It appears in none of the Vernon’s City Directories. I can find no theatre ads in the Spectator Newspaper for a theatre with this name. Also the picture of its facade posted above is of the Bank of Montreal at James Street North at Barton Street which is about 8 blocks from the corner of James and Cannon which is where it supposedly existed.

The closest theatre with a balcony to James and Cannon would have been The Grand Theatre/Granada/Downtown which existed from 1880 to 1961 – although this was not an “Art Deco” Theatre.

There are the Cineplex Upper James Theatre at 1045 Upper James near Stonechuch, butthis is an 8 plex that is no where near downtown..
