Opened as the Tyrone Theatre on 7, July 1965 by Wometco Theatres with seating given at 700. Later operated by AMC. until closing in 1979. This was the first theatre built in St. Petersburg in 35 years according to the newspaper, the Evening Independent. The opening attraction was James Garner & Dick Van Dyke in “The Art of Love”.
I was an manager there around 1976. The theater had been playing X rated films for several years and had fallen into disrepair. I was transfered from the nearby Crossroads Twin to get the place open as a dollar theater. It is a Winn-Dixie now.
X rated Fare ruins a theatre.
