The Floyd Theater opened on June 30, 1936. It was originally operated by Long Theatres of Bay City. Owner Floyd E. Appling named the theater for his young son, Floyd Jr. Ads for the new theater announced "This is keen!", based on a statement by Floyd Jr. after touring the facility for the first time. The premier features at the Floyd Theater were Irvin S. Cobb’s "Everybody’s Old Man" and the Dionne Quintuplets in "The Country Doctor".

The 1963 El Campo City Directory lists the Floyd Theater at 114 N. Washington Street. William Spooner was the manager.
The last movie to play at the Floyd was “How to Murder Your Wife” with Jack Lemmon and Virna Lisi. That was on August 17, 1965.
