The Floyd Theater opened on June 30, 1936. It was originally operated by Long Theatres of Bay City. Owner Floyd E. Appling named the theater for his young son, Floyd Jr. Advertisementss for the new theater announced "This is keen!", based on a statement by Floyd Jr. after touring the facility for the first time. The premier features at the Floyd Theater were Irvin S. Cobb’s "Everybody’s Old Man" and the Dionne Quintuplets in "The Country Doctor".
