The Comique Theatre was listed in the 1914-1915 edition of American Motion Picture Directory. It was renamed Camden Theatre around 1942. The Camden Theatre is located on Mechanic Street and the building become a clothing and shoe store, known as The Maine Foothills. By 2017 it is an antique store named Camden Merchant’s Co-operative.
The 20th Century Fox CinemaScope movie “Peyton Place” staring Lana Turner was filmed on location in Camden, and it had its World Premiere at the Camden Theatre on December 11, 1957.

n the 1942-43 Motion Picture Almanac, Graphic Theaters Circuit of Boston is listed as the operator of the Camden Theatre in Camden Maine; however, it also lists the Comique in Camden as part of Graphic Theatres. But from the above, I gather that the Camden and the Comique were the same theater. Graphic ran a number of movie theaters in Maine, NH, VT and MA at that time.
It would be great if anyone had a picture of it maybe link it from flickr?

I’ve walked through the building many times on shopping trips. It is colonial revival on the outside – the inside is a single level, simple ornate pillars down the sidewalls, the proscenium is still there (sealed off – but I don’t think there was a stagehouse.) From the floor tiles in the former lobby area I would say this has been retail since at least the early 1960s, perhaps back to late 1950s. It has been well maintained, all painted creamy white color; and you can still see the projection windows.
Here’s an 84 year-old man who remembers attending the old Comique Theatre in Camden. I stood in the balcony and watched Gulliver’s Travels. I think it was my 12th birthday. The Comique was an entirely different building than the photo you show. It was torn down and replaced during WWII.The new Camden Theatre had no balcony, and was larger.
