Found an old drive-in in Mathis, TX during a Google Earth search. The Mathis Drive-In was opened on April 20, 1950 with Larry Parks in “Jolson Sings Again”.

The Mathis Drive-In was listed in 1955 with a capacity for 350 cars. The drive-in was sold for redevelopment in October 1962. The screen was destroyed by Hurricane Celia on August 3, 1970.

I have 500 cars in the 1956 Motion Picture Almanac and it was owned by L.D.Glasscock.

Sep 25, 1954 Billboard Magazine says…“John Reed, manager of the Mathis Drive In, Mathis, Tex., has announced that CinemaScope has been installed at the drive in…”.

Oct 9, 1954 Billboard Magazine says…“Leon Glasscock, head of the Glasscock Theater Circuit, has announced that CinemaScope is being installed in his seven theaters and two drive-ins that comprise the circuit. Drive-ins include the Mathis Drive-in, Mathis Tex., and the Trail Drive-in at Pleasonton, Tex….”

you can barely see the outline and some of the ramps but they still remain!

Sounds like Leon may have been one of those guys who sold his drive-in like a used car off a lot.

Boxoffice, Nov. 18, 1950: “L. D. Glasscock has put his Mathis Drive-In up for sale”

Motion Picture Exhibitor, Oct. 31, 1962: “The Mathis Drive-In, Mathis, Tex., operated by Leon Glasscock, has been sold and will give way to a homes development project.”
