The Plattsburgh Drive-In opened in 1948 and was the first drive-in in the Plattsburgh area. It was opened by Benjamin Hobbs who also operated indoor theatres in five north country towns. The lot on which it was located measured 500 by 700 feet. Outdoor church services were held here in addition to the movies. In 1956 a CinemaScope screen was installed.
The Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87) was built in 1966 passing a mile east of the drive-in, which led to heavy commercial development in the area.
The Plattsburgh Drive-In closed after the 1973 season.

Opened July 27, 1948, closed 1973, can anyone verify the exact dates?
Held 300 cars.
More info and photos are always welcome.
I’m not sure I agree with the location. All their ads say they were located 1 mile west of I-87, but Hammond Lane is less than a half mile from the highway.
Can anyone come up with a better address?
In the 1950’s a company called Plattsburgh Salvage (later known as Globe Metal Service) advertised itself as opposite the Plattsburgh Drive-In.
An article from 1965 says “Owner John Quinn, of Quinn Motor Sales, will lease property from Franklin Akey on the north side of the highway adjacent to the Plattsburgh Drive-In Theatre”. Another article (also from 1965) states that Mr. Akey is erecting a new building near the drive-in that will be leased to a Canadian manufacturer of aluminum overhead and industrial doors.
I don’t know if this helps but I hope it does.

That came from Montreal’s La Presse in 1973. The US drive-in increased its ads in the Montreal market when drive-ins were finally allowed in Quebec.
Approx. address for this drive-in was 558 New York 3.
