Kinema

The first purpose built cinema in Newark was the Kinema, built for Emily Blagg and opening on 20th December 1913. It was claimed to seat 1,000, most likely all on one floor, but by 1943 the capacity was given as 750. The Kinema was a great success allowing Emily to build the far grander Palace Theatre in 1920, but in 1921 both were sold to Newark Cinemas Ltd.

The Kinema closed in 1958 and was converted to a store (Suite Inspirations in 2011), the two tiny shops either side of the cinema foyer however remain today as separate entities.

The 1944 Kinema Yearbook gives the seating capacity as 781.
