Brookdale East Cinema

This three screen GCC house in the northern Minnespolis suburb of Brooklyn Center opened March 29, 1972. Seating was provided for 1,492 with 720-seats in Screen 1 and 386-seats in screens 2 & 3. In the late-1970’s Screen 1 was twinned.

Smoking was still allowed in cinemas at the time of opening. Brookdale offered "free" smoking loges. It was closed January 14, 1999.

The cinema still stands and has been used as a church.

It might have closed in 2000 but it wasn’t GCC then. When GCC closed it most of the concession stand went to Southtown as did some of the equipment.

Brookdale East opened in 1972 as a triplex seating 720 in Cinema I (with a GCC shadow box encase screen) and 386 in CinemasII & III. I believe that Cinema I was split into two theatres in 1978 or 1979. I always liked the design of this theatre, even with the painted concrete block. The layout was very efficient and the lobby attractive. In the evening, the lobby seemed to glow and welcome the theatre patrons.
