The Fort Wood Theatre was opened by Commonwealth Amusement Corp. on April 17, 1941. They were still operating it in 1972. Soon after it was renamed Park Cinema, which closed in 1980. It was used as a store and the building was later destroyed by fire.

“The Fort Wood theatre, Waynesville, Mo., which is largely patronized by service men from Fort Leonard Wood, has just installed a wide screen, the first in the area, for the showing of CinemaScope.” — Motion Picture Herald, Sept. 4, 1954
Address was 105 Historic Rt 66 East. Name was changed to Park Cinema after 1973 and prior to 1984, photo added of it closed by that time added. (Circa 1942 photo added as well.) Building was owned by Norman Fields who used it for storage for his store in St. Robert after that. Burned down and demolished after 1984. Speedy’s gas station was built on the site, and today “The Shop, Guns and Pawn” is inside the former Speedy’s.

“When I-44 was constructed, the route through Waynesville was designated as City 66. The 1,234-seat Fort Wood Theatre opened on April 17, 1941. The owner said the theatre “Compares with the largest in Springfield and Jefferson City.” The theatre closed in 1980. It was damaged by a flood and torn down.”
