Originally opened with three screens in 1974 by Famous Players, the Penhorn Mall theatre was the first multiplex theatre opened in the Halifax/Dartmouth area. It was expanded to five screens sometime in the 1980’s. In June 2004, Famous Players sold this complex and the Park Lane 8 in Halifax to Empire Theatres. Empire continued to run the theatre to compliment their own six-screen multiplex further down Portland Street.

Empire closed the theatre on May 17, 2007, and it was demolished, along with the rest of Penhorn Mall, in 2010. The site is currently a gravel lot, awaiting redevelopment.
