I believe this opened as the York Drive-In in 1947 and closed in the early-1970’s and reopened as the Cinema City Drive-In in 1974. It was located on Rt. 17 and closed in 1999. Car capacity was listed at 270.
The Owners painted this name on the Screen just before it was demolished in honor of a friend who had been killed in an auto accident.
I have it at 300 cars in the 1956 motion picture almanac.Sam Ashman the owner in 1956.
Google Earth shows a Theatre Road just off of VA 17. No real evidence of any drive-in ramps, but a couple of spots that might have been of enough size to house a drive-in.
Surprise, surprise! It is now a Walmart! Approx. address was 2459 George Washington Memorial Hwy. (Route 17). Yorktown, VA.
This one was unique, as it was a traditional twin co-located with the drive-in. It closed in the mid-1990s – I think it was around the time that the Regal down the street in Kiln Creek opened. As another poster mentions, the property was redeveloped and is now a Super Wal-mart.
I just posted a photo of the Opening Ad dated June 25, 1947
