Originally built as the Hanbury Assembly Room, it was converted into the Theatre Royal in 1903. It had a 24 feet wide proscenium. Converted to films c.1930, becoming the New Royal Cinema. Around 1946, it reverted back to the Theatre Royal name, continuing as a cinema until closing on 31st May 1958.
