Summerville Drive-In

In researching this theater, I believe the Summerville Drive-In opened on July 5, 1948. I could not locate an opening day advertisement for it. It was the first of the L.H. Ayers Drive-In Theatres chain. Eventually it included the 4-Mile Drive-In, St. Andrew’s Drive-In, and the Holly Hill Drive-In in Holly Hill, SC. They were advertised has “Charleston’s Only Home-Owned Drive-Ins”.

The Summerville Drive-In had a car capacity of 200 cars and had in-a-car speakers. The drive-in closed in July of 1956. The property sat empty for years and was finally redeveloped for retail.

Here is an ad for the Summerville Drive-in; it is from the gallery page of an unamed drive-in in Summerville, SC at Drive-ins.com. The information for this drive-in in the database there gives the address as “Highway 64 (Portable)”, whatever that means. The gallery page also includes an aerial view of the drive-in’s former location.
