In 1940, the Nemo was refurbished with scientifically installed air condition and here’s a shot of its exterior.

I grew up on 108th between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. Went to tthe Nemo many times and the competitor the Olympia on 107th and Broadway. Also remember the Arden on Columbus Ave and 104th or 103 and the Park West on 99th off Columbus.

I grew up on Riverside Drive and 119th street (1943-1961), and the Nemo was my local theater, along with the Olympia. I never questioned why it was called Nemo – it just was “The Nemo” (Latin for “no one”). Was it named after the comic strip “Little Nemo” or for Captain Nemo in Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?”
