By 1920, it had closed and was converted back into a skating rink. It re-opened as the Empire Theatre in May 1922 by John Maxwell’s Scottish Cinema & Variety Theatre Company Ltd. It was closed again by 1925. By 1930 it had been converted into the Palais de Dance.

In the 1950’s many pop groups appeared at the Palais de Dance. It was closed around 1970, and the building became derelict. It was destroyed by a fire on 17th March 1972.
