It sounds like there was a fire — and the theatre was rebuilt in 1947

I’m wondering if an item in the Daily Bulletin of the Manufacturer’s Record for March 12, 1907, could be about the theater on the Palace’s site that was destroyed by an explosion in 1947? It says:

“Seguin, Texas—Theater.—E. Nolte & Sons are having plans prepared by J. C. Ayers of San Antonio, Texas, for a modern theater 60x125 feet: cost $14,000.”
The Palace looks to be about that size.

I considered the possibility that the 1907 project was the Kempenstein Opera House, which, according to advertisements reproduced in this book, opened in 1908, but the web site of the Seguin Heritage Museum says that the opera house was upstairs in a building built in 1898.

Still, the Kempenstein Theatre is the only theater listed for Seguin in the 1909-1910 edition of Julius Cahn’s Theatrical Guide, so perhaps the 1907 project was never carried out. But then maybe Julius Cahn was simply never notified of its existence by the mystery theater’s operators. Does anyone have any clues?

The Palace has two screens, not one as this is a twin cinema. Main one has 350 seats and the upstairs has 160 seats. It’s very active now and its new Web page is at www.seguintheatres.com

The information above is almost all wrong. The Palace was NOT built in 1955; there was a theatre on that site since the early teens. It was never called the Texas Theatre (that is another theatre that Seguin Theatres owned down the street, it still stands and is being restored).
The original Palace bulding blew up with a natural gas explosion in around 1947 and the owner, H. A. “Windy” Daniels and his wife Maxi rebuilt the theatre immediately (they put up a screen outside in the parking lot and continued to show movies!). The Palace is in beautiful shape, has fresh paint, fairly new carpet, the booths have been retrofitted with state of the art DVD projection, modern platter systems, New Xenon bulbs, and DTS surround sound. The theatre is open almost every week for movies, special shows, plays, birthday parties, and other events. Come see shows on March 3,4,5. See www.davideo.tv for information.

In 9/03, I photographed this theater, and the marquee shows that the ‘Friends of the Library’ were presenting ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. I got the impression that this was a play. Last month, I was there again, and nothing on the marquee. The lobby seems to be in very good shape. The original popcorn machine is still there. The bottom of the marquee has neon arrows pointing towards the doors.
