When the theatre first opened in 1928 as the “legit” Shubert Jamaica, the only entrance was around the block on 165th Street. That proved impractical when the theatre became a cinema, so a store on Jamaica Avenue was taken over and transformed into a new entrance and lobby that connected with the auditorium at the rear. The side entrance was shut down, but the original marquee was used for display purposes and remained for many years.
