An e-Bay listing for a postcard flyer shows that tiny Maine, N.Y. had a theatre – or at least a place where movies were shown – at some point in the mid-1930s.

The flyer advertises “Grand Opening Talking Pictures” with “new - improfed sound” at “Community Hall in Maine”. The movie to be shown is “What Price Crime” released in May 1935. The show is scheduled for Friday, October 24th. Oddly, October 24th in 1935 seems to have fallen on a Thursday, and in 1936 on a Saturday.

The e-Bay listing also has a similar postcard for the Whitney Point Theatre; the operations may have been by the same people.

Maine’s business district is small and diffuse. If the “community hall” still stands, the Catholic Church building would seem to be the most likely candidate. The church’s website indicates that their facility is remodeled from an old inn and meeting hall that was built in 1837. The church’s occupancy dates from 1942.
