Center Theatre

If I understand this right this theatre opened as the Broadway Theatre in 1916 and was owned by Mr. P.A. Boone. Seating at that time was for 475 patrons. The address listed was at 72 S. Main Street. I am not sure if the Broadway Theatre was demolished and the Center Theatre was built at that address or if there was just a name change. At any rate by 1939 the theatre was called the Center Theatre at the same address. Mr. Benjamin Smart was the manager at that time. The seating changed from 475 to 423. It was operated by Wilby-Kincey in the early years as the Center Theatre.

This theatre was another one involved with a street/number change. It went from 72 S Main Street to 116 N. Main Street. I guess they don’t like to leave street names and number alone in NC. The final manager of the Center Theatre was Mr. Richmond Gage, and the theatre closed in 1963. I cannot get Google to map to the accurate address.

I suspect that the Center Theatre was on the lot that now has some seating in front and what looks to be public restrooms toward the back. The lot is across the street from Mayberry’s Music Center, which has the address 117 N. Main.

Mayberry on Main is south of the Earle Theatre, and should have a smaller number, but the Earle is 142 N. Main. The shop should probably be listed at 122 N. Main, but for some reason it’s listed all over the Internet at 192. Maybe somebody made a typo once, and it just spread to every other web site.
