Playhouse Cinema

Viewing: Photo | Street View

Located in port and resort town of Felixstowe, Suffolk, at the corner of Hamilton Road and Cobbold Road. The Picture Playhouse was opened on 27th July 1914. In 1929 it was equipped with a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system, and by 1933 was known as the Playhouse Cinema.

The Playhouse Cinema was closed in 1970, and was soon demolished and a supermarket was built on the site. There is now a branch of Boots operating on the site today.

My grandfather Henry Lazell used to work as a projectionist there until it closed in 1970.

My mother married that same year, and so I came along a year later, so sadly I have no memories of the Playhouse, but it’s nice to think I had a little bit of cinema heritage in me.
