It should be noted that the information on the closing date given by Contributor Ron Pierce is erroneous. Could be a typographical error. Lonnie and Charmy LeaVell purchased the theatre approximately 9 years ago from Micheal and Darcie Claire and it sat idle until they formed a 501 ©(3). It was designated by the IRS as a charitable nonprofit in 2014. They donated clear and free title to the nonprofit Gooding Restoration for Entertainment, Arts and Theater, Inc. aka GREAT, Inc. to restore the theatre and as such the nonprofit is the owner. As memory serves me, at the time of purchase, the Western States College was not running at the time of the purchase from the Claires in approximately 2008.

The Schubert (Gooding Cinema) Was never converted to two screens, Interstate Amusement of Twin Falls bought it from Bud Schubert and listed the marquee as a two screen but actually a ploy to be able to screen two different movies nightly. It still has a balcony (less seating) And has just achieved an IRS 501C3 non-profit class and will be undergoing restoration soon by a local group.

The NRHP registration form for the Schubert Theatre says that it was designed by Hugo Clausen.

Clausen was a Salt Lake City decorator who, like San Francisco’s Gale Santocono, sometimes did architectural design. His company decorated the Egyptian Theatre in Boise, Idaho, and Clausen himself painted murals in the Central Theatre in Ely, Nevada.

My family moved to Gooding in 1953, I attended school 5th grade thru 9th Grade there. I have many fond memories while we lived in Gooding, one is the Saturday afternoon Matinee’s at the “Schubert Theater”…. I’m very thankful those fond memories that you were a part of in my life.
