This cinema replaced an earlier Picturedrome which had opened, with 1,000 seats, on the same site, in 1911. That had a white external finish decorated with prominent pillars and a large dome and was designed by Liverpool based architectural firm Campbell & Fairhurst. Sound equipment was installed in 1931, but in 1934 the entire building was demolished.

A new, enlarged Picturedrome was built, now with seating for 1,100 in stalls and balcony. A luxurious foyer ran the full width of the cinema with stairs at either end leading to a luxury waiting lounge and the balcony. The Picturedrome was purchased by the Rank Organisation in 1955. It closed in 1970 but was not demolished until the 1990’s. Housing now occupies the site.

Campbell & Fairhurst were originally based in Southport before moving to Liverpool.
