Palace Cinema

Viewing: Photo | Street View

Located in Coleraine, County Londonderry. The Picture House was opened in 1914. It was remodeled in 1937. By 1947 it had been re-named Picture Palace under new ownership.

By 1963 it had been re-named Palace Cinema. CinemaScope had been fitted, and the proscenium was 23 feet wide. The screen measured 20 feet x 10 feet. The Palace Cinema was still listed as operating in 1965, but probably closed in the 1970’s, as it had gone from listings by 1980. It was converted into shops, and in December 2008, work was being carried out to remodel the building, possibly into retail use again. This had been completed by 2014.

My photograph was taken in September 2008, evidently not long before the former cinema was renovated/reconstructed and reopened as a retail outlet.

On a visit in September 2014 I was delighted to see the former cinema all spruced up and open as a retail unit.

The Picture Palace opened in 1914 and was designed by J. S. Kennedy. Reconstructed in 1937, maybe as a result of the Palladium being rebuilt. Associated for some time with the Christie family.
