Carlton Cinema

Located in Tyldesley, 4 miles to the south of Bolton, Lancashire. The Carlton Cinema was opened on 22nd July 1911 and had 450 seats. It was owned and operated by Joseph Woods Theatres. It was equipped with a RCA sound system in late-1930. Closed in 1938, it re-opened on 16th February 1939 after refurbishment, and now had 693 seats. The proscenium was 25 feet wide. Equipped with CinemaScope in the mid-1950’s, it was closed in March 1962 and became a bingo club.

After the bingo club closed, it became a fireplace warehouse, but suffered an arson attack in May 2008. By 2009, the building was offered for redevelopment and was demolished for housing to be built on the site.

The old bingo signage matches that used by EMI at the Empire Bingo in Accrington, so was this an EMI bingo venue at some point?

Empire bingo Accrington was in a former Co-Op, rather than a cinema I must add!
