Astro Theatre

The building originally housed an Opera House on the 2nd floor. The first floor was used as a hardware store. This space was converted into the State Theatre, which was opened on October 10, 1948 with Dorothy Lamour in “On Our Merry Way”.

An advertising card for “THE STATE THEATRE, Newest Theatre in Butler County, March 1950” lists the upcoming features and shorts for that month: features changed two, sometimes three times during the month, show times for weekdays 7:15 and 9:15. Shorts and cartoons with each feature, the double features (d.f.) are on the weekends. This reads like a college level film history course.

The titles listed are “Eagle Squadron” with Robert Stack “Illegal Entry” on a double feature with “Ride Ryder Ride”, Bob Hope in “The Great Lover” “Marysa” (a Czech film), “Law of the Barbary Coast” d.f. “Roughshod” “Francis” with Donald O'Connor, “Challenge to Lassie” d.f. “Cheyenne Cowboy” Betty Hutton in “Red Hot and Blue” Burt Lancaster in “Rope of Sand” “Sons of New Mexico” d.f. Laurel and Hardy’s “Block-Heads” Spencer Tracy in “Adam’s Rib” “Home of the Brace” d.f. “Satan’s Candle”

The State Theatre was still open in 1955. On October 8, 1965 it was taken over by new operators and renamed Astro Theatre. It was closed on February 11, 1968 with Tony Curtis in Don’t Make Waves".
