Located in Darwen, south of Blackburn, Lancashire. The Theatre Royal was built and opened in 1877. Films were part of the programme from 1909, when from May 1909 it was leased to Animated Pictorial Enterprises Ltd . and was re-named Pictorial Palace.

From 18th April 1910, it began programming dramas on stage and ‘Pictures’ on the screen under the management of F.R. Griffith.

In 1930 it was wired for sound and a Western Electric(WE) sound system was installed. In the early-1930’s it became part of the F.J. Butterworth Theatres chain, operating as the Theatre Royal Cinema. It was closed by 1936.

Re-opened as a live theatre in 1939, it operated into the mid-1940’s. After closing it had a variety of uses, and was demolished in 1960.
