Rex Cinema

Located in the Denton Holme district of Carlisle. The Star Hall was a purpose built cinema which opened on 3rd February 1912. It was designed by M. Johnstone, and the auditorium had open roof trusses in the ceiling, and painted panels on the sidewalls and to each side of the proscenium which depicted country scenes. It had a narrow entrance that was sandwiched between houses. It had a billiards hall attached. By 1934 it was operated by the Graves Cinemas chain.

In 1938 it was re-named Rex Cinema. Around 1960, it became a part-time bingo club on several evenings a week. By 1962, it was a full-time bingo club, although it was still listed in editions of Kinematograph Yearbook into the 1970’s.

The Rex Cinema is operating as the Opera Bingo Club in 2021.
