South Beach Pavilion

Located in the seaside town of Tenby, Dyfed. Shanly’s Amusements Pavilion was opened on 12th July 1929. This six-storey building on the South Beach contained a cinema, dance hall, skating rink, roof garden and amusements hall. It was built on the site of an old steam mill.

The 660-seat cinema had a 25 feet wide proscenium, a 12 feet deep stage and two dressing rooms. In 1930 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.

In the early-1930’s Mr. M.W. Shanly was declared bankrupt, and the building was sold to new operators. It was re-named South Beach Pavilion. In 1938 a LaFleur (Hammond) 2Manual electronic organ was installed, which was opened by organist Stanley Miller. It had a console with a ‘cinema’ design surround, and was played regularly into the late-1940’s.

The cinema was equipped with CinemaScope in the mid-1950’s. It was closed around 1975, with other parts of the building in occasional use during the summer seasons.
