Smith Haven Mall theater 1997

One of the Century mall theaters that sprung up all over Long Island in the 1960’s. Century’s Smith Haven Mall was opened in June 1969. It was twinned and then quaded but had nice size screens and auditoriums. Cineplex did a nice renovation in the mid-1980’s, but when Loews built the StoneyBrook 15 across the street, business fell off. Instead of booking it with independent and art films to appeal to Smithtown’s upper class residents, they used it as a dumping ground for bad films and move-overs. It closed this year the same day as the Walt Whitman.

No. Pathmark’s old parking lot opens up into the Smithhaven parking lot, but not the mall itself. Seperate buildings and shopping centers.

You can’t even tell this theater existed in the mall anymore. I went by some weeks ago in the mall, and had trouble even locating where it was!

QUESTION: I remember this mall did not open up until 1975 or so. Am I wrong? Some of the posts go back further than that date! Best flick I had seen there: the 1978 “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”! UA always showed Pink Panther cartoons before their features…this was a lost art by the late 1970’s with other chains, but UA kept doing it. Does anyone recall “Featurettes”…short films shown before the features. The RKO Twin in Commack often had these……

I enjoyed Midnight Maddness 3 Stoodges Movies in the 80’s at the Mall Theater…

Does anyone know which store now occupies the space of the theater? I remember the theater so well, but the mall has changed so much, that I can’t remember what store is there now.

What stores in the mall now fill in the space where the theatre used to be? Anyone remember?

I was just in the mall the other day. I forget what store is where the theater was, but I did note a long exit hallway which I recall being next to the theater entrance. If I’m right, the location is on your right in the first corridor as you walk toward the center of the mall from the food court. I think it’s a very large womens' clothing store.

I was here several times but my favorite memory was when I went alone to see Heaven’s Prisoners. Had to have been pretty shortly before it closed. Once it was quadded the theaters were really small. I was the only person in the theater. Literally the only one. The size of the theater made it feel like a private screening in some really rich dude’s home.
